When it is noticed that the grubs do not turn into pupae anv longer, it shows that the second brood of larvae, which will not turn into moths before the snrin?. are comin? down and the bands may now be left till all the fruit is off the trees. If the bands are left on durinff the winter and examined in September, grubs which have been disturbed by winter cultivation may be found to have hidden beneath them. Bands are little good if there are other places where the catprpillars can hide and the tree, should therefore be scraped clean of all loose bark, broken branches should be removed and all holes and scars filled up with putty or cement. In orchards where the Codling Moth is known to exist and no bands have been used, it will be found very useful to do this work in winter and burn the scrapings. Numerous grubs will thus be killed. All apnle, pear and quinre trees in bearing should be banded. Quince hedges had better be cut out. where the moth occurs, as they prove nothing else but nurseries of the pest. No matter how carefully the measures mentioned are carried out against the Codling Moth, they will prove of little value without spraying, while proper spravinsr alone will give good results; but the best results are naturally to be expected where spraying is practised in conjunction with the other measures. The expense of a spraying outfit and the cost of insecticides, however, will prevent many people from spraying for the first few years; but gradually they will realize that spraying cannot be dispensed with.
